Today was one of the most memorable days at our Satsangh. We had an Akanda Rama Nama Japa session at our residence.
Last Saturday, we received a message from our Guruji asking each satsanghi to chant 1 Lakh Ram Naam, for acquiring the various qualities of a devotee such as Sama (balance in pain and pleasure), Dama (control of senses), Uparati (tranquillity), Titiksha (forbearance, bearing heat and cold), Sraddha (faith and sincerity) and Samadhana (balanced state of mind).
On that day, we thought we would do a Sankalpa for each devotee and try and accomplish what seemed an uphill task of chanting 1 lakh Ram Naam in one day itself.
Sureshji recorded the chant at home and gave us the audio clip, which we played in the background. Here is a clip for those who want to hear.
We had around 30-35 Satsanghis attending during the day and can comfortably say that we managed to chant over 20-25 lakh times together! It was quite memorable and amazingly we did not feel any stress or exertion at all at the end of a long day of chanting. Surely, this is the power of Ram naam and our Guruji’s blessings.

After Hanuman returned to lord Rama’s camp after completing his mission of finding the whereabouts of sita, Lord Rama and Sugriva marched with their Vanara army towards the southern sea. When the Vanara army reached the Mahendra mountains they rested for a while. The spread of the Vanara army on the hill tops was a glorious sight though fiery. It appeared as if the whole earth was covered with monkeys, monkeys and more monkeys. In Lanka, Ravana, who learnt through his spies about the Vanara army camping on the other side was very much worried. He summoned his ministers for advice. All of them praised Ravana to the sky declaring that he was unconquerable . These words comforted him and boosted his pride. Ravana also consulted his brothers Vibishana and Kumbhakarna . Vibishana advised Ravana to return Sita to Rama and make peace with him but Ravana would not listen to him. Vibishana and his 4 friends left Lanka and took refuge in Rama. However Kumbha karna agreed to fight for his brother Ravana.

Kishkinda was ruled by a monkey king Vali who was renowned for his strength and valour. Once, an asura named Mayavi challenged him for a duel. A fierce fight erupted between Mayavi and Vali in the outskirts of Kishkinda, and Vali’s brother Sugriva watched them praying that his brother should win the duel. The two entered a cave and continued fighting in the cave for more than a year. Sugriva who waited all this period, returned home in sorrow assuming his brother was dead. The elders of Kishkinda appointed Sugriva as the king to succeed Vali. After some years, Vali suddenly returned to Kishkinda, and found that his country was now being ruled by his brother Sugriva. He mistook that his brother usurped his kingdom and threw him out of the Kishkinda and captured his wife. “A wise monkey is the monkey that does not monkey with another monkey’s monkey ” Sugriva took refuge on a mountain named Rishyamooka as he knew that his brother could not pursue him there because of a curse on him by a sage.

Sundara Kandam comprises of 2885 verses & is fifth in order. Sundara’, as we all know in the literary sense means ‘beautiful’. ‘Kandam’ means ’section’. It is also interpreted beautiful because it is the recovery of something precious that is lost, and that is a very unique experience. According to the belief of Hindus, Sundara Kandam is a mine where we can draw powers to support us in worldly situations. This is the core of Ramayana and provides all values for overall welfare of mankind.

Sugreeva and his four-vanara ministers are taking refuge atop the mountain of Rishyamukha. One fine morning Sugreeva sees two handsome young men, divine looking and resplendent with the kshatriya armor. On seeing them, Sugreeva is terrified. He opines that his brother Vali has sent them to this mountain to kill him, and then in a rush hastens to flee from that place along with his entourage. But Hanuman calms him down and suggests that he would go and enquire about their identity and the purpose their visit to that place. After taking Sugreeva’s permission he assumes the guise of a young brahmachari and approaches the two newcomers with reverence and humility. He enquires them of their identity and the purpose of their visit to the mountain. Lord Rama and Laxmana reveal their identity and narrate the purpose of their visit, which is to search for Sita with the help of Sugreeva. Lord Hanuman is extremely happy at the turn of events. He then carries them to Sugreeva on his shoulders.

Ramaayana is one of the two itihaasa [historical account] scriptures of Sanathana Hindu Dharma. It contains the story of Lord Raama the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the tretaa yuga – referred to as the silver age among the four ages in a Mahaayuga. Ramayana along with Mahaabharaatha is the most popular amongst the Hindus all around the world today and in fact is even considered by many as a fifth veda.

It is indeed an honor to narrate this wonderful portion of Ramayana, SundaraKaanDam. As the name suggests, this chapter is simply beautiful and it has been described as the piece de resistance of Ramayana – the ice-cream after a wonderful meal – without the calories and sugar.
