HIRANYA-GARBHO BHOO-GARBHO MADHAVO MADHU-SOODANAH

HIRANYA-GARBHO: One who dwells in the womb (garbha) of the world (hiranya). In the Isa Vassya Upanishad, the first sloka declares that “All these are indwelt by the Lord”. We always refer the world as “Golden Universe” where gold means “objects of fulfillment and joy”. One who dwells in them all is Hiranyagarbhah. In Gita, the Lord tells in many places that He is the very womb of this universe and all its objects.

BHOO-GARBHO: One who is the very womb of the world (Bhooh). The world has emerged out of the Lord. In the viswarupa darshanam of the Lord, this world occupies an insignificant though sacred portion, just as the foetus in the womb is constantly and lovingly nurtured and nourished by the very essence in the mother. Bhoo-garbho also means the protector of the Earth, the wife of Vishnu.

MAADHAVAH: maadhavah means the Lord of Maayaa. ‘Madhu vidyaa’ is a technique explained in the Chandogya Upanishad. The Lord is the one who is experienced through the practice of Madhu vidyaa. Maadhavah also means ‘One who is silent’. The Lord is ever silent, non-interfering observer in all our actions done through body, mind and intellect. Sage Vyasa writes in the Mahabharatha, “O Bharatha! Know Madhava by Mauna, by meditation and by yoga”. Maadhavah is the Lord whom the seeker experiences when he stills the mind and is purified by the yoga practices.

MADHU SOODANAH: The Lord is the one who destroyed the great Asura Madhu. Vishnu destroys the two asuras Madhu and Kaitabha forms one of the chapters in Devi Mahatmyam. Actions done with selfishness always leave strong impressions which are carried life after life called as Vaasanaas. When we meditate on Sri Hari, the Lord destroys our Vaasanas and thus gains the name Madhusoodanah. If we keep some jasmine flowers in a tissue paper for sometime, the tissue smells of Jasmine. The mind offered to the Lord turns pure and fragrant.

We will meet tomorrow.
