Vishnu Sahasranamam – 18
March 7th, 2010 by Chitra Devaraj

Namaskar Mahatmas!

A glance of what we did yesterday……

  • Anuttamah – Lord Vishnu who is ‘incomparably Great’
  • Duraadharshah – All-powerful; one who cannot be attacked, stormed
  • Kritajnah – One Knower who knows all that is done by all
  • Kritih – He who visits to bless the good and punish the evil
  • Aatmavaan – One who is the Self in all beings.

SURESAH SARANAM SARMA VISVA-RETAAH PRAJAA-BHAVAH

SURESAH: The Devas are called as Suras. (And their opposites are called Asuras). The Gods are called as Suras because they are capable of blessing the devotees with the fulfillment of their desires. Eesah means the Lord. Suresah means the ‘Lord of the Suras or the Lord of the Devas’. The Lord is the best among those who fulfill our desires. In Bhagavatham it explains that the Lord is the one who can give us Bhakti, Jnanam and Mukti. He is one who can give us the state of bliss and total liberation from all desires and ego.

SARANAM: The Lord is the Refuge for all (all creatures, immovable and movable) who are suffering from the ties of imperfections of life. Saranam also means Home. He is the Home where all of us return ultimately. After a tiring day, what we look out for is ‘our home’. Similarly the world which is the nature of misery and impermanent, a seeker looks out for a place in the lap of the Lord. The Bhagavad Gita explains that the Lord is our Ultimate Goal, our Destination and the Harbour. The one who realizes Him comes to live with Him.

SARMA: One who is Himself the Infinitel Bliss. We are in the state of Bliss when we transcend our mind. When the agitations caused by the ego and desires end, one reaches the shore of bliss. In our scriptures, the Lord is named as ‘Satchidaananda’ – ever of the same nature; Sadaa Anandah – ever in bliss.

VISVARETAH: Retas means ‘seed’. The Lord is the seed of this visvam, the Universe. He is the seed from which the tree of life has sprung forth. He is the seed for the entire play of experience in this world of plurality.

PRAJAABHAVAH: The Lord is the one from which all living creatures (prajaa) spring forth (bhava). Hence He is named as Prajaabhavah.
