Vishnu Sahasranamam – 21
March 7th, 2010 by Chitra Devaraj

Namaskar Mahatmas!

  • Ajah – Unborn since the Lord is eternal and infinite
  • Sarvesvarah – God of all gods; Supreme controller of all
  • Siddhah – One who has achieved all that has to be achieved; most famous
  • Siddhih – The Lord is the one who blesses one with Moksha, a state of no return
  • Sarvaadih – One who is the beginning of all

VRISHAAKAPIR AMEYAATMAA SARVA-YOGA-VINISSRITAH

VRISHAAKAPIH: Lord Himself says in scriptures: “Since Kapi has a meaning ‘boar’, and since Vrisha has the meaning of ‘Dharma’, the great Kashyapa Prajapathi says ‘I am Vrishaakapih’. Kapi also means ‘that which saves one from drowning’. The Lord in the form of Great Boar (Varaaha), had lifted the world (Bhu) from the waters at the end of the deluge. The Lord Vrishaakapih is the one who lifts the world drowned in Adharma to the brightness of Dharma age after age.

AMEYAATMAA: The Lord’s manifestations (Aatmaa) in infinite varieties are unaccountable (Ameya). All different names and forms have risen from Him, exist in Him, and finally go back into Him alone. All forms are His own different forms. The tenth chapter of Gita tells us that the Lord’s glories are immeasurable and whatever we see is only a fragment of His power. Ameyaatmaa suggests the cosmic form of the Lord.

SARVA-YOGA-VINISSRITAH: Yoga means ‘to unite; to join; to attach’. One who is totally free from all contacts or attachments is a Vinissritah. We can get attached to a thing other than us. In the reality which is Infinite, which is partless, which cannot be divided, who is attached to whom? This is a beautiful Naama which explains that there is nothing other than the Lord. Attachment is the love with possessiveness and desire for gratification. The Upanishads say “This Purusha is, indeed, unattached”. Lord says in Gita “In this whole creation, nothing binds Me”.

Sarva-yoga-vinissritah also means “One who is beyond the reach of various types of yogas taught in the Shastras”. These yogas help one to quieten the mind, to discriminate between real and unreal, to end our wrong identifications and to annihilate Maayaa. He is beyond all yogas. The silence what is left when we discard the contents of our mind is Lord Vishnu.

A high officer makes a stamp of his signature; it is as valid as his own signature. Naama is like such a stamp; it has the same effectiveness, the same authority as Lord.

HARI OM MAHATMAS! We will continue tomorrow.
