Vishnu Sahasranamam – 22
March 7th, 2010 by Chitra Devaraj

Namaskar Mahatmas!

  • Vrishaakapih – One who lifts the world drowned in Adharma to the light of Dharma.
  • Ameyaatmaa – One whose manifestations are unaccountable
  • Sarva-yoga-vinissritah – One who is beyond the reach of various types of Yogas taught in the shastras.
    VASUR-VASUMANAAH SATYAH SAMAATMAA SAMMITAH SAMAH

VASUH: The one who is the very support of all elements and also He Himself is the very essence of all the elements. It is like the dream made up of our own mind; the same dream-world plays itself out, all the time sustained in the very same mind. Similarly the Self indwells in all and all dwell in the Self. In the 10th chapter of Gita, the Lord says “I am among the Vasus, the Paavakah”. The air allows everything to remain in it and sustains everything by it. The Self exists like air.

VASUMANAAH: One who has the mind which is supremely pure. The mind which is pure does not have the sins of passions, pains, desires, jealousies, likes and dislikes.

SATYAH: He is ‘Real’. He is the Supreme Truth. That which remains the same in all three periods of time is called Satyam. He who remains the same, before the creation, during the existence and even after dissolution, is the Infinite, Supreme Truth. Upanishads call Him “Satyam, Jnaanam, Anantham Brahma – Truth, Knowledge, Bliss”. Panchadashi explains beautifully that the Supreme Truth is there in all the three states of our experience – waking, dream and deep sleep. Waking state we are aware of everything physically with our body and mind. In the dream the presence of body is not felt and only the mind is at play. In the deep-sleep state, there is no body and mind. but when we come after the sleep we say ‘I had a good sleep’. That awareness which is beyond the body, mind and intellect and which supports all these three is the Supreme Truth.

SAMAATMAA: He who is equally in all. Lord Yama explains to Nachiketas how the same Truth come to express itself differently from form to form in Kathopanishad. To visualize the Lord who revels equally in all, among perishable and imperishable, is the divine vision. Gita says one who sees equally a dog, dog-eater, gold, mud, Brahmana is a Jnaani. Lord Krishna says in Gita “I am the seer in all the fields-of-experiences everywhere”.

SAMMITAH: ‘Sammatam’ means that which is ‘acceptable’. The one Truth which has been proved and accepted by the Great Rishis and saints in the Upanishads through subtle logic and philosophical reasoning is called Sammatah.

SAMAH: Samah means equal; the same. The Truth remains the same everywhere. One Reality plays the game of plurality. In Kathopanishad it is said that: “The one principle of Fire having entered this world burns itself out differently according to the nature of equipments, so the One Truth manifests as many Jivas”. Hence the Lord is called Samah.

Hari Om Mahatmas! We will continue our meditation on naamas tomorrow.
