Vishnu Sahasranamam – 3
February 24th, 2010 by Chitra Devaraj

We will continue the ‘Installation of the Lord’ – Anga Nyaasa.

6: Whenever there is a large wealth in a box, it becomes a precious treasure for us and it is locked and protected safely; when we have installed the Lord in our heart, the body becomes the temple of the Lord, and therefore, it has become a treasure-house to be protected. But we have no power to protect and so through this mantra “ Saarnga-dhanvaa-gadaa-dhara iti astram” we invoke the very weapon (Astra) of Vishnu, who is the protector of the world. Saarnga is the name of the Bow of the Lord Vishnu and the Mace (Gadaa) is another of His weapons. When this mantra is mentally chanted, we lift the palm away from the feet, and with stretched index and middle fingers of the right palm snap them on the open left palm as a mudra of protection of the invaluable treasure – the Lord.

7: The Lord as Sri Krishna played a part as a charioteer for Arjuna and gained the name ‘Rathaangapaani’. A charioteer guides the step of every horse for the chariot to be safe, and the travel to be pleasant. Of all our sense organs, eyes are the most powerful and once they are guided well, all other sense organs follow its heels. When Lord Vishnu is installed in our eyes, we are safe in our spiritual journey. Therefore the Lord is installed in the pair of our eyes when we chant this mantra “Rathaangapaanir-akshobhya iti Netram” mentally. With the tip of the fingers, let us touch both the eyes.

8: The Lord (Tri-Saamaa) is glorified by all the three types of Saamaa songs (Deva-Vrata-Prokta). The Lord Vishnu is the very essence that is glorified by the Saama songs (Saamagah). The Lord’s glory itself is the manifested Sama Veda (Saama). This great Lord is installed as an armor to wear for Self-protection. When we cover ourselves with the Lord, what can harm us? While chanting this mantra “Trisaamaa saamagah saameti Kavacham”, we touch with the right hand fingers, right hand shoulders; and with the left hand fingers, left hand shoulders and afterwards cross the arm as if we are actually wrapping and wearing the Lord.

9: The Supreme Brahman, the Infinite Bliss is the very womb (Yonih) from which the whole universe has emerged out. The endless names and forms in this universe has only one Eternal Father who is the source of immeasurable bliss – the Lord. When this mantra “Anandam Para Brahmeti Yonih” is chanted, we install the Lord at the very place of Procreation. It is a spot in this great divine temple of the body, wherein is the one source of many.

10: There are three mighty forces that guard the sacred temple of Life in us from the outer world of influence. They are: Truth (Ritam), the Lord; His weapon, the Discus called Sudarshana and His annihilating power, Time (Kaala). There are plenty of distractions in this world of names and forms. How can we then guard or protect our spiritual world? In this life, one has to be very truthful and always seek the reality (Ritam); one has to discriminate and the see the play of the Lord in all situations of life (Su-Darshanam); one has to control the very instrument of time (Kaala), which is our intellect. When we chant this mantra “Ritam sudharshanah kaala iti Dikbandhah”, we snap the middle finger with the help of the thumb and run the palm around our head (Dik-bandhah) – meaning shutting off distractions in all directions which are obstacles in the vision of Truth. After all, the world dwells in our own concept.

HARI OM MAHATMAS!
