Vishnu Sahasranamam – 33
April 2nd, 2010 by Chitra Devaraj

Namaskar Mahatmas!

  • Upendrah – Younger brother of Indra; One who is superior to the mind (Indra)
  • Vaamanah – One who has a small body – the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu
  • Praamsuh – One whose body is vast – when he took promise He was Vaamana; when He started measuring, his cosmic form is vast
  • Amoghah – One whose activities are ever a fulfillment of some great purpose.
  • Suchih – One who is spotlessly clean; Ever-Pure
  • Oorjitah – One who has infinite strength and Vitality
  • ATTENDRAH SAMGRAHAH SARGO DHRITAATMAA NIYAMO YAMAH

ATTENDRAH: One who is beyond Indra in knowledge, strength and glory is the Lord Vishnu. Indra represents our mind and intellect. The Supreme Self is that which transcends the mind and intellect.

SAMGRAHAH: One who holds the entire world of beings and things together in an indissoluble embrace unto Himself. Just as the hub of a wheel holds the rim unto itself by its endless spokes, so too the Self within lends Its life to every cell in the body and to every thought in the mind. All the glories are borrowed from Him only. Lord Vishnu holds the world of names and forms unto Himself in a huge hug of Love and oneness.
SARGAH: One who has created this world out of Himself. Just as a spider makes it web with its own saliva without depending on the external support, this world is created by the Lord. So this world is His own form which is both subtle and the gross.
DHRITAATMAA: One who supports Himself by Himself is a Dhritaatmaa. Samgrahah and Sargah explained that He is uniting force of Love in this world of names and forms and He is the material and efficient cause of creation. He is the support of this phenomenal world. Who supports Him? He doesn’t need a support as He is established in Himself.
NIYAMAH: The Lord is the Appointing Authority. It is He, who orders all the mighty forces of nature like the Sun, Moon, Air, waters, Dik-paalakaas, Death etc and prescribes for each the laws of their conduct, the ways of their behavior and the method of their functions. All the forces of nature are appointed and ordered by the Lord.
YAMAH: One who is the mighty power that rules the forces of Nature by His laws. Everything in nature strictly obeys ever all His laws.
    Hari Om Mahatmas!

I thank you for posting the various puja and how to do them. Some of us who are very new to the Hindu way of pujas, it would be nice if you could post a video of the actual puja on Youtube. It would help in learning the various gestures and mudras accompanying the different mantras and shlokas.

You are doing a great service and please keep up the good work!

    Thanking you,
    radha r. dwyer
