April 2nd, 2010 by Chitra Devaraj

Namaskar Mahatmas!

  • Ateendrah – One who is beyond Indra in glory, strength and knowledge; The self is beyond the mind and intellect
  • Samgrahah – One who holds the entire world of beings and things like the thread holding the flowers in a garland in great love and oneness.
  • Sargah – One who has created out of Himself the whole world
  • Dhritaatmaa – One who supports Himself by Himself
  • Niyamah – He, who appoints and orders all the mighty forces of nature
  • Yamah – Everything in nature strictly obeys ever to the laws of the Lord, Yamah

VEDYO VAIDYAH SADAA-YOGEE VEERAHAA MAADHAVO MADHUH

VEDYAH: That which is to be known is the Lord, the self of all beings. In Gita this is termed as Jneyam. That final knowledge, knowing which everything becomes known is the Self. When one rejects the gross, subtle and causal factors, one will be able to feel that Harmonious chord of Reality that holds this phenomenal world in its strong arms of love. That chord runs through us as our real Essence called the Self. This final goal to be known by us in this very life and Upanishads say, “Having known which everything else becomes known”. The One Knowledge to be gained (Vedyah), is the Self, the Great Vishnu.

VAIDYAH: The Supreme Doctor who alone can save the world from the suffering of ego and ego-centric misconceptions. One who is a master of all knowledge (Vidya) is also termed as Vaidyah.
SADAA YOGEE: The ignorant and the deluded to detach themselves from the wrong identification with the matter and to seek identity with the Eternal Self is called Yoga. In the eyes of the seeker, the Self therefore is a Sadaayoga – ever in yoga. One who is in sadaayoga never moves even a fraction of second from the Lord. Hence the Lord too is a sadaayogi who is in constant touch with His devotees.
VEERAHAA: He who destroys the mighty heroes is a Veerahaa. The powerful men of strength and valour when they grow in their audacity to become tyrants, the Lord manifests to destroy such Asuras and Raakshasaas and thus protects the Dharma and the Good.
MAADHAVAH: We have come across this name ‘Maadhavah’ already which means ‘Lord of Lakshmi’ or ‘Lord of all knowledge’. Since these verses are dealing with the theme of knowledge and yoga, the following meaning also suits this name. Maadhavah is one who helps introspection and meditation in the seeker. To become conscious of existence of a thing is called the Knowledge of the thing. The Self is the source of all knowledge. Even the existence of our own presence is because of the Self. If we are in a dark room, we can’t see anything around us. We are not aware of where the door is or what things are around us. But we don’t need anything to show our presence there. We don’t need a light or somebody to point out our existence. Harivamsa says: “O Hari, you are the Lord (Dhava) of Knowledge (Maa), and hence you are called as Maadhavaa, the Master of Knowledge”.
MADHUH: Madhuh generally means ‘honey’. It also means ‘nectar’. One who generates nectarine Bliss in the hearts of the devotees is called Madhuh.
The spring season in India is called ‘Madhu maasa’ since spring is the season of flowers; full of honey for the bees and joy for man. The month called ‘Madhu’ (March – April) is the Chaitra month which is considered specially auspicious for prayers and meditation.
The devotees pray to the Lord leaving their identification with the limitations drink the honey of knowledge which is Amrita. The essence of knowledge, the bliss that one gets just by chanting His name once is Madhuh. Bhagavatham says ‘devotees are like bees stuck to honey; the sweetness never let us move from the Lord’.
    Hari Om Mahatmas!
