Vishnu Sahasranamam – 7
March 7th, 2010 by Chitra Devaraj

RUSHAH: The Rishis conceive our body as the fortress with nine gate-ways. The One who rules within it, like a king, is the Self. The Lord is the One who dwells in the Fort-City (Puri sete iti Purushah). The Purushah also means “That which was before creation”; “One who completes and fulfils the Existence everywhere”, meaning, without Whom Existence is impossible.

SAAKSHEE: The Lord is the “Witness” (Saakshee). In everyday life, He is a witness in all our experiences. Just as the Sun illumines everything in the world and yet the Sun is not affected by the condition of the things it is illumining, so too, the Lord illumines all, without Itself undergoing any change. In the 13th chapter of Gita, the Lord says: “I am the one Ksethrajnaa in all Kshethras. The ‘Knower’ in every heart is the same Supreme Self.”

KSHETHRAJNAA: The whole of the 13th chapter of Gita speaks about what is ‘Kshethra’ and what is ‘Kshethrajna’. The Lord says that one who knows about both is the one who is really knowledgeable. Kshethrajna is the Self, the Lord, who knows the body and all the experiences from within the body. Bodies are ‘fields’ (since we reap the results of our Karma with that) and the Atman illumines them all without effort and therefore the Atman or the Lord is called the Knower-of-the-field, Kshethrajna.

AKSHARAH: Kshara means destructible. Aksharah is that which cannot be destroyed or Indestructible. Things which are limited by time and space are finite and can be destroyed. The Lord is infinite and unconditioned and so He is Aksharah. In the 2nd chapter of Gita, the Lord explains to Arjuna that the Self cannot be burnt by fire; water cannot wet It; air cannot dry it; the Self cannot come under any natural methods of destruction or through willful actions of man. In the 8th chapter of Gita also the Lord says that the Brahman is Akshara, the immutable being than whom there is none higher.

In the sloka, the word ‘only’ (eva) is used, indicating that Kshethrajna is the Aksharah.

POOTAATMAA PARAMAATMAA CHA MUKTAANAAM PARAMAA GATIH

AVYAYAH PURUSAH SAAKSHEE KSHETHRAJNO AKSHARA EVA CHA

Namaskar Mahatmas! The indestructible Lord, the Saakshee which is witnessing every thought and attitudes of us, is inside our body. Kshethra is always kept always clean, without any impurities. Similarly this body along with the mind, which is the temple of the Lord, should be always maintained pure, without the touch of desires, ego, attachment etc. These naamaas speak of the highest truth explained in various scriptures and this alone if meditated can take us beyond sorrow of Samsara.

Hari Om!
